The game

What is Ships and Shanties?

Ships and Shanties is a Viking-pirate survival and seafaring adventure. You begin with little, learn to survive a harsh northern coast, craft better tools, build and improve your own ship, and venture into dangerous waters, alone or with friends.

Is the game released?

Ships and Shanties is in development. A release date has not been announced yet. Follow the development journal for news as it is confirmed.

What kind of game is it?

A survival, exploration, crafting and shipbuilding game with ship customisation, naval gameplay, trade, quests and cooperative multiplayer, set in a grounded, mythic North Sea world.

What does the website’s artwork show?

While official captures are being published, some pages use illustrative artwork created for this website to show atmosphere and art direction. Illustrative artwork is always labelled and is not gameplay footage.

Gameplay

What can I do in the game?

Gather resources, craft tools and equipment, build up your capabilities, build and customise ships, explore coastlines, islands and ruins, trade and take on quests with NPC settlements and factions, and face the dangers of the sea. The Gameplay page describes each part of the experience.

Can I build my own ship?

Yes, and customising your ship is the big selling point. You make a hull at a shipwright table, then build your ship on top of it: every ship has sails and rigging, and the rest is yours to add and change. See the Shipbuilding page for how that journey is described.

What are shipwright table tiers?

The shipwright table comes in tiers, and each tier lets you make bigger and better hulls. They are a feature of the shipwright table, not a game-wide progression system.

Is there trade, questing or anything beyond sailing?

Trade, quests, factions and NPC settlements are all part of the design, in a persistent world. Details are not final and will be shared as they are confirmed. The Gameplay page describes each one.

Is there naval combat?

Ships can be equipped for naval activity, including different categories of mounted weapons.

Multiplayer

Can I play with friends?

Yes. Cooperative multiplayer is part of the game: you can host a game, invite friends, and join other players.

How do friends join my game?

Joining through Steam and by direct connection are both part of the intended multiplayer experience. Exact steps will be published once the workflow is final.

Is there a player limit?

The design target is up to 16 players, including the host. Full-capacity support is still being tested, so this figure may change.
